Controlling Mildew
Mildew is an airborne fungus. When provided with adequate food water and shade, mildew will flourish. The generally damp, cool coastal Maine marine climate provides the perfect environment for mildew growth. You can avoid mildew developing on your sails by following a few simple rules.
1. Keep your sails as dry as possible. When your boat will not be used for an extended period of time, take the sail off the roller furler to keep it clean and dry.
2. Annual washing by your sailmaker will help remove pollen and other pollution that acts as food for mildew.
3. Always store your sails in a cool, dry location, never put them away damp.
Mildew can be treated if it is caught early enough. Check your sails often. The longer the mildew remains the harder the stain will be to remove.
