Should I fold my sails?

The answer is: yes and no. Most sails will be happier (and last longer) if rolled, flaked or folded than if stuffed into a bag. On the other hand, most modern sail fabrics, especially those used to build cruising sails, are pretty forgiving of rough treatment. As a general rule, the softer the hand (ease of flexing) of the fabric, the less likely it is to be bothered by being stuffed in a sailbag. The fabrics that are most likely to be damaged by rough treatment are racing laminates of the film-scrim film variety and highly resinated woven Dacrons such as the so called `Yarn Tempered' finishes. Because different fabrics take to folding so differently, ask your sailmaker about your particular sails.
